According to Microsoft, web standards doesn't really mean web standards Internet Explorer 8 provides a tag that developers can use to force IE8 to render like IE7. Why? For those times their "standards compatible browser" doesn't render something correctly. Uhh, hello Microsoft. If your new browser were standards compliant, we wouldn't be having this issue.
